Have you had “The Talk” with your kids yet? No, not THAT talk. I mean have you talked with your kids about money? It’s almost as important as that “other talk”.
Much about how we handle our money actually came from our upbringing. My biggest goal in raising my kids is that they will do better in all areas of their life than I did. That includes finances. For that to happen, I need to educate them as well as model it for them. That means I need to be improving myself as well as teaching them. Just telling them to do as I say, not as I do isn’t going to cut it. You need to say it and do it.
This September 16th is National Money Talk Night. It’s sponsored by American Express, but I think it’s a good thing in spite of that. 🙂 You can find more information and tips for having “The Money Talk” at the link above.
Remember though, even more important than telling them about it is modeling it for them. As you begin to improve your money situation by getting on a budget and making a plan for the future, they will learn from you and get started on the right foot in their own lives.
